Mitai Maori Village
The Mitai Village is very well respected tourism attraction that is based in Rotorua. It caters to likes of international and domestic tourist who are very interested in the Māori Culture history and their way of life. Their aim is to take care of their guest and give them the best experience an indigenous culture can provide.
If you are getting picked up from you accommodation, or a tourists visiting for the day, everyone is greeted personally by one of the beautiful Māori Maidens who will be dressed in tradition clothing. The Maori Natives are very passionate people who cherish their culture and consider their garments to be very sacred and special. Visitors are allowed to take a photo; this is a way of the Māori people embracing their hospitality and gratitude to their guest. Upon arrival the Mitai Village will teach guidelines of entering a sacred place, for example the Hongi, this is contact with the nose and the forehead between two people, this is to share one air and breathe together. This way of greeting has been performed by ancestors and manuhiri (visitors) for many years and still done to this day.
Warriors in traditional dress paddle an ancient warrior canoe (waka) down the Wai-o whiro stream, this is very rare to see, and only certain streams in New Zealand have this attraction. The Mitai Village gives visitors the opportunity to see glow worms in their natural habitat. Marvel at the crystal clear water full of eels and trout flowing directly from the earth at the sacred “Fairy Spring”.
Guest can be captivated by songs, dances and games in a rich powerful entertaining cultural concert; listening to the traditional sounds of Aotearoa, infused with Waiata, Moteatea, karanga, Taonga puoro (traditional) Māori musical instruments. This is great way to experience an authentic Māori
Traditions. To end the entertainment, a “Haka” is performed, this is a traditional Māori
War dance, this dance can be quite intimidating, but it is very harmless and has great respect from Māori People and their tribes.
To ensure that everyone is having fun, there is also a Hangi that is has been cooked in the earth oven (Hangi Pit), this done in the ground and visitors can learn the preparation and contents of a traditional hangi. This authentic hangi dinner includes a hot selection of delicious New Zealand meats and poultry, delicious vegetables and fresh salads, topped off with a desert buffet and full bar facilities.
